Previous research has examined performance and musculoskeletal measures in response to yoga training; however, a wide variety of yoga protocols, testing measures, and specific populations make the results equivocal. Yoga is unique compared to other exercise modalities, such as traditional resistance training and endurance training. Motor unit (MU) control strategies and mechanical behavior of the muscle has been examined following resistance and endurance training, but not in response to a yoga intervention. The purpose of these studies are to examine the effects of 8 weeks of Hatha Vinyasa yoga in healthy, recreationally active adults on (1) isometric strength, input excitation, MU properties of the vastus lateralis (VL), (2) mechanical behavior of the VL at different intensities, and (3) performance and musculoskeletal adaptations. A short-term Hatha Vinyasa yoga intervention was shown to improve isometric strength of the knee extensor muscles and increase excitability of lower-threshold MUs without a change in muscle size of the VL, but it had no effect on the mechanical behavior compared to controls. Additionally, yoga improved arm bone mineral content (BMC) and trunk lean mass (LM) as well as flexibility, shoulder and hip range of motion, and balance-specifically on an unstable surface, which led to overall improved movement quality that was not observed in controls. A yoga practice that incorporates static and controlled dynamic components has the potential to improve variables that could positively impact quality of life in a healthy, recreationally active population.
