The primary focus of the dissertation is to investigate how hearing parents of deaf and hard-of-hearing children perceive deafness and the factors influencing their decision-making process to choose a communication option for their child. Furthermore, the dissertation examined the role of service providers (audiologists, Speech-Language Pathologists, and Teachers of deaf and hard of hearing) in information sharing about various communication options. Utilizing the mixed-method approach, the study combined qualitative insight from parent interviews and online surveys to draw a thematic analysis. At the same time, the quantitative component employed the Chi-Square test to find a statistically significant association. Key findings highlighted a considerable disparity between parental understanding and dissemination of information about communication options. This discrepancy suggests a disconnect between the information provided by professionals and its reception and understanding by parents. This disparity highlights the necessity of structural adjustments to guarantee comprehensive, unbiased, and transparent communication regarding options for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The findings underscore the significance of providing extensive and unbiased information to parents to assist in their decisions and offer a framework for enhancing the lines of communication and comprehension between families and service providers. This study makes a substantial contribution to the profession by identifying critical areas for improvement in disseminating information to parents of deaf and hard-of-hearing children.
