The purpose of this study is to understand how mental health counselors perceived the benefit of counseling for patients with chronic terminal illnesses in terms of managing psychological symptoms throughout medical and mental health counseling treatment. There is a considerable gap in information and resources available for individuals receiving mental health care for chronic terminal illness diagnoses. While information does exist for a primary diagnosis of terminal illness and mental health treatment, there exists a limitation in what resources are available for chronic terminal illness. This research utilized a generic qualitative approach with semi-structured video interviews. Eight licensed clinicians who have provided mental health treatment to individuals with chronic terminal illness were interviewed as the target population. The sampling design was nonprobability purposive sampling. The Diathesis Stress Model (Monroe & Cummins, 2015) was used to explore the impact of stress, pre-existing conditions, and disorder development, to suggest and predict the potential for coping with trauma as it occurs (Bornstein, 2018; Scheeringa, 2021; Wenzel, 2017). Emergent themes consisted of blame of God, dying does not have to be a lonely process, the impact of hyperarousal for individuals with chronic terminal illness, and finding peace and acceptance in death were identified using a step-by-step analysis. Subthemes included "Why is this happening to me?", self-blame, guilt, and regret, legacy as a beacon of hope, vulnerability builds bonds and intimacy, shared humanity in struggle, physical and mental adjustment to hardship, and a second chance at life. Participants in the study identified that individuals could benefit from a reduction of psychological distress symptoms, particularly in terms of anxiety and depression symptoms. However, their symptoms may not entirely abate due to the terminal nature of their diagnoses (Bakhiet et al., 2021). The results uncovered several unexpected areas of future targeted exploration, including the support systems' role in terms of individual resiliency, spirituality, and response to psychological distress. In addition, the impact of substance use using mental health counseling was identified as an anomaly of the research and could further warrant targeted research regarding this phenomenon. Through the understanding of the benefits of mental health support with chronic terminal illness, clinicians will develop a better understanding of early intervention strategies and ways to support individuals through their journey from diagnosis to end-of-life transitions.
