This thesis will introduce the reader to GIS-based measures of walkability, mobility, and flow, arriving at the deep-gravity model as the state-of-the-art method at the time of publication. Meanwhile, it will balance these topics with insights from the humanities, history, personal accounts and other such research. By providing the reader with tools, tricks and methods for incorporating place-based data into a comprehensive model of urban flows, this paper aims to expand this new school of pedestrian modeling and urban mapping. After establishing a set of modeling standards, this thesis discusses three case studies. The first is an investigative map of Chicago Public Schools. The second is an interactive game and exercise in critical cartography. The final case study is a speculative projection of a public school, informed by the findings of thesis. This method cultivates a practice where architects are not afraid of either the lack of specific urban data or counter-intuitive results. Furthermore, it promotes a hermeneutic practice of research, where ground-level observations generate data collections, and anomalies in models inform further exploratory campaigns. The pedestrian network model here described is intended to work in tandem with field studies and empirical observations. As the case studies illustrate, it is also intended to create speculative cartographies in the same register as more traditional forms of mapping. The overarching goal of this thesis is thus to move towards designing public school districts that reduce fossil fuel dependency, foster creativity and promote diverse learning outcomes.
