Hydrogen is an important molecule to study both theoretically and experimentally because of both its simplicity compared to larger molecules and importance in industry. In many catalytic processes, hydrogen is often present as a reactant, in a transition state, or as a product. A hydrogen economy is also of growing interest to stop climate change. This requires storage and transportation solutions. Single atom alloys (SAAs) have been shown to be good, affordable catalysts by combining the low activation energy of an expensive metal in dilute amounts in a cheaper, more selective base metal with intermediate binding of intermediates in the reaction. In this work, we study H2 dissociative adsorption and recombinative desorption on SAA RhCu(100) using temperature programmed desorption (TPD), reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). In chapter 2, we explain the updates made to our chamber setup to incorporate the study of SAAs. In chapter 3, we discuss a technique for dosing H atoms on Cu(100) as a quantitative calibration for H ML coverage for TPD peaks in chapters 4 and 5. In chapter 4, we were able to determine that Rh sites can be corked by two CO molecules and not just one which increases the desorption temperature of H2 from the surface, and in chapter 5, we learn H atom spillover only occurs on the RhCu(100) at low Rh coverages. Then, in chapter 6, we discuss how this work will lead to the study of larger polyatomic molecules with molecular beams in our chamber.
