The aim of the research is to synthesise conducting organic polymers which are sensitive, selective and discriminatory towards a wide variety of chemicals. In order to achieve this aim, various nitrogen-substituted pyrrole and 2,5-di(2-thienyl)pyrrole compounds were synthesised. These were chemically characterised in order to establish their identities and confirm their purity. In order to determine the oxidation potentials of these compounds for polymerisation, a linear sweep of potential from 0 to 3.2 V was carried out. The compounds were subsequently polymerised electrochemically and used in gas sensing experiments. Nitrogen- substitution was carried out in order to produce conducting polymers having particular selective properties towards various chemicals.Gas sensing measurements were carried out using these polymers in order to establish their sensitivity and selectivity towards the volatile chemicals used. Concentration-response profiles were generated from which the sensitivities of the sensors to these chemicals were established. Sensitivity bar diagrams were then generated in order to show the ability of the sensors to discriminate between the chemicals used. The volatile chemicals used in this experiment were chosen on the basis of their functional group, size and possession of a dipole moment.
