The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the Old Testament is used within the speech of Stephen in Acts 7:2-53 in order to determine the nature of the speech's composition. When the Old Testament quotations and allusions are examined in their proper contexts, it becomes clear that while Luke's hand is evident in its composition, the speech also exhibits certain qualities that suggest it is based on original ideas and concepts presented by Stephen himself. Chapter one surveys the history of the scholarly investigation into Stephen's speech, with a special focus on the research of the source and redaction critics. The seminal work of Martin Dibelius is given special attention. This analysis of the various views concerning Stephen's speech furnished a foundation for noting the negative results of the tradition-reaction approach to Stephen's speech. Chapter one also points out evidence which suggests Luke is the composer of the speech of Stephen. In chapter two, the use of speeches in ancient historiography is discussed in regard to the generally accepted notion that the ancient historians freely composed speeches and placed them into their narratives as expressions of their own ideas. The discussion revealed that while the approaches adopted by the ancient historians differ from that acceptable in the modern world, it is not unreasonable to assume that some of the best of the ancient historians, within certain boundaries, did attempt to pass on the essential substance of what the ancient speakers actually said. The third chapter examines the use of the Old Testament within Luke-Acts. A survey of recent studies helped to establish several important criteria for the evaluation of the Old Testament within the speeches of Stephen. Chapter three continues by representing the major characteristics of how the Old Testament is used in Luke-Acts. The final chapter analyzes the use of the Old Testament within the Stephen speech using the criteria suggested in the previous chapter. The conclusions reached by this dissertation are two-told. First, the speech of Stephen exhibits the unique style and handling of Luke, especially in the verbatim quotations the Old Testament and the close adherence to the language and vocabulary of the LXX. Therefore, the speech could be considered the composition of Luke. Second, the speech of Stephen also exhibits unique features that suggests Luke has preserved a historical summary of the unique ideas and concepts presented by Stephen. Therefore, Stephen's speech cannot be said to be a Lucan creation.
