This project examines word-level translation alignment as a tool for facilitating a new paradigm of "language hacking." In this frame, readers use digital tools to engage directly with source materials in languages with which they may be unfamiliar. The goal of this new discipline is to carve a third path between reading solely in translation and being limited to those works in languages over which one has mastery.I first present the results of a pilot study measuring the impact of digital word-level translation alignment on the comprehension of users of a reading environment working with a language they have never seen before. Having demonstrated the value of this form of annotation, I then introduce and evaluate a novel approach to the task of automatically generating word-aligned translations using the topology of parallel syntactic dependency trees.
