Modern environmental and climate challenges call for accelerated electrification both at the industry level and at the consumer level. This clean energy transition heavily relies on innovations in electrochemical energy storage technologies. This work wants to shed more light on the incorporation of carbon nanodots into the likes of rechargeable ion batteries and supercapacitors as one such contributing innovation. Rechargeable zinc batteries face challenges with anode reversibility, especially with lean electrolytes, impacting their cost-effectiveness for large-scale energy storage. In the first study, the involvement of zinc-coordinated carbon nanodots with histidine and carboxylates paved the way for an interphase that safeguards zinc anodes from dendrites and corrosion, while improving Zn2+ affinity and diffusion. In the second study, the use of sulfonyl-doped carbon nanodots as precursors for a laser-induced 3D carbon foam network manifested in a remarkably stable and conductive composite material for supercapacitor applications. The versatile and effective role carbon nanodots play in both works is on full display, as they show their potential for high-energy-density storage devices.
