This thesis uses the French feminist theory of ecriture feminine to demonstrate how Charlotte Perkins Gilman, an American feminist intellectual, successfully mediates masculine and feminine discourses in her novella The Yellow Wall-paper (1892) and utopian novels Herland (1915), With Her in Ourland (1916), and Moving the Mountain (1911). In The Yellow Wall-paper, Gilman exposes the ways in which phallocentric discourse might entrench itself in women's minds by creating a female narrator who is caught between the authoritative masculine discourse of her husband and her own resisting feminine mode. Ultimately the "wall" of masculine authority overwhelms the narrator, whose unified self becomes destabilized as she falls into madness. In Herland, With Her in Ourland, and Moving the Mountain, Gilman reverses the phallogocentrism that overpowers Wall-paper's narrator by envisioning utopian societies that de-center the phallus and merging masculine and feminine discourses through her male narrators who arrive at ecriture feminine.
