This dissertation builds on the premise that African American literature evidences its greatest power in its portrayals of the interior. Interiority, or the unstated and untouched components of the Black collective that ornament the African American literary terrain, takes precedence in African American literary texts that depart from the response and resistance that have come to circumscribe Black people and Black cultural production. To critically contemplate Black interiority, I implement the term "quiet-stillness," a convergence of Kevin Quashie's concept of "quiet" and Toni Morrison's definition of "stillness" to reference Black interiority as housed in the "quiet" and "still" spaces of African American literature. I employ quiet-stillness as the foundation for the three critical lenses I introduce and expand in my study: the reader as listener, the maternal poetic, and Afrodemia. I explore these concepts through Morrison's literary catalog, which I put in conversation with 20th and 21st century African American literary texts. Collaboratively, these critical lenses posit African American literature and its showcase of interiority as yielding both intellection and liberation unique to the power of culturally specific fiction.
