In my dissertation, I examine the era of high through late British modernism as a precursor to our current moment of global neoliberalism. This project rethinks and re-contextualizes modernism by viewing modernist literature as relevant to the history of our contemporary moment. Such an approach brushes up against the commonplace that modernism no longer holds revolutionary potential in postmodernity. While most modernist scholarship relies on a clear split between modernism and postmodernism, I read the modernist novel with an eye to contemporary formations of capitalism, which allows me to bridge the gap between the two disparate movements and gain a necessary understanding of how neoliberalism developed and eventually became an economic and cultural dominant. Drawing from theorists such as Fredric Jameson, Mark Fisher, and Stuart Hall, I argue that reading modernist literature in the era of neoliberalism necessitates an attention to the ways late-stage capitalism instills a sense of cultural pessimism in contemporary reading practices and how British modernism becomes symptomatic of the decline into the ideology Fisher terms "capitalist realism"- the widespread belief that alternatives to neoliberal capitalism are no longer possible. A key element of my analysis centers around the way the collapse of the British Empire sowed the seeds for the subsequent cultural hegemony during the second half of the twentieth century of the economic powerhouse of the United States. I undertake this analysis through a reading of modernist and late modernist novels by James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Wyndham Lewis, George Orwell, Rumer Godden, Alan Sillitoe, Samuel Selvon, Anthony Burgess, Muriel Spark, and Malcolm Lowry. My dissertation constitutes a necessary intervention that applies contemporary theoretical frameworks concerning capitalist realism to past literary forms that gave rise in the first place to such modes of thought.
