This paper presents a theory of serial order which attempts to account for serial learning and for the parallel aspects of sequential performance. Two kinds of parallelism are integrated in the theory: parallelism across time, or coarticulatory parallelism, and parallelism across space, or dual-task parallelism. It is shown that coarticulatory parallelism can arise when learning is restricted to certain critical features of the actions being learned. Noncritical features can be used to anticipate or perseverate aspects of other actions in the sequence. The same mechanism leads to interference between processes in dual-task parallelism, if the processes are learned separately. Learning regimes to suppress dual-task interference take the same form as those used in learning conflicting critical features in the sequences. The theory has been implemented as a parallel, distributed processing network, and simulation experiments are presented. The behavior of the network is shown to be characterized by an attractor dynamics, where the learned sequences correspond to limit cycles in state space.
