The 2018 Sulawesi Earthquake and Tsunami serve as a somber backdrop for this thesis, which provides an in-depth geospatial analysis of the calamity's impact on Palu, Indonesia. Through remote sensing and the application of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), this study maps the extent of the destruction and evaluates the region's vulnerability to such catastrophic events. It draws upon a rich dataset from satellite imagery to dissect the correlations between topographical features, land use, and the varying degrees of damage observed across the urban landscape. The thesis advances a multi-criteria decision-making framework that underpins the assessment of vulnerability and risk associated with tsunamis, taking into account the complex interplay between natural and anthropogenic factors. By integrating elevation, slope, coastal proximity, and land use, the research offers a granular perspective on the spatial distribution of tsunami related damages and identifies patterns that are vital for disaster risk reduction strategies. Moreover, the findings emphasize the urgent need for urban planning that prioritizes resilience, incorporating the nuanced insights gained from geospatial analyses. The study's outcomes are poised to inform policy-making, contributing to the establishment of enhanced early warning systems, optimized evacuation routes, and the strategic placement of infrastructure. The overarching goal is to equip coastal cities like Palu with robust preparedness measures, ensuring a proactive stance against the inevitability of future natural disasters. In sum, this thesis not only charts the aftermath of one of Indonesia's most significant recent disasters but also lays the groundwork for a more informed and resilient approach to urban planning and disaster management in similarly vulnerable coastal regions around the world.
