Multiferroic materials simultaneously exhibiting ferroelectricity and magnetism have attracted great attention in recent years due their potent coupling effect, and potential application in the electronics industry. The aims of this study was to investigate the effect of ferro-magnetic (Fe3O4) nanoparticles on the thermal, magnetic, and ferro-electrical propertiesof PVDF, and its co-polymer poly (vinlydene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene), P(VDF-TrFE) composites. In recent years, the need for high breakdown strength in capacitors has grown exponentially, as the microelectronics and power industry is continually evolving in the optimization of portable technology. With the use of multiferroic materials as polymeric capacitors, higher dielectric performance for energy storage can be achieved. Here, we evaluated the potential of multiferroic PVDF/P(VDF-TrFE) loaded with iron (II, III) oxide (Fe3O4), as the dielectric layer in a double-plated capacitor. These compounds were synthesized into flexible nanocomposite thin-films, via solvent casting method. At first, 1-10wt% Fe3O4 nanoparticles were dispersed in PVDF/P(VDF-TrFE) using a hybrid ultrasonication and magnetic stirring mixing methods. Multiferroic nanofilms were prepared by annealing the mixture at 150˚C. Specimens were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Infrared Transform Microscopy (FTIR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to observe crystallinity, and to obtain β- phase polymorph. Determinations of dielectric properties were performed on gold-sputtered nanofilm electrode using Impedance Analyzer. Hysteresis loops were obtained from Radiant© Multiferroic Analyzer, which showed an increase in peak polarization at coercive field of 2000kV/cm in 7wt% P(VDF-TrFE) films with a dielectric constant of 6.32x10-11, which makes it a desired specimen for application in embedded capacitors. Magnetic tests were done using Vibrating Sample Magnometer (VSM), which yields the magnetic polarization with respect to change in field magnitude. Highest magnetic moment occurred with the addition of 10wt% Fe3O4 nanoparticles at 3.66 emu/g. Target applications of nanocomposites are for microelectromechanical system (MEMS) devices such as memory cards, spintronic, sensors, electromagnetic shielding, and compact energy storage.
