By conducting three separate qualitative studies, this dissertation draws on the entrepreneurial ecosystem perspective to examine entrepreneurship and innovation in China. The three studies in this dissertation focus on individual, organisational, and inter-organisational challenges for new ventures to seize and actualise the opportunities in the entrepreneurial ecosystem in China. This dissertation addresses three research questions.1. How can novice entrepreneurial firms can overcome the liability of newness when engaging in organisational sensemaking?2. How do incubated entrepreneurial firms construct responses with a public incubator to cope with institutional complexity?3. Which HRM practices are likely to help to overcome different barriers and promote open innovation in the entrepreneurial ecosystem? The first study shows how novice entrepreneurial firms without formal structures and sufficient discoursive resources are likely to face major challenges when navigating through uncertainty and equivocality. Drawing on the qualitative interview data, we develop a grounded model of entrepreneurial sensemaking, which encompasses collective improvisation, collaborative selection, and iterative refinement. The second study demonstrates the strategic responses of entrepreneurial firms for addressing institutional complexity. The findings indicate that the overall entrepreneurship process is guided by competing logics, and by co-constructing responses with the public incubator as the critical stakeholder, the incubated entrepreneurial firms can achieve mutual benefits by merging both community and private interests. Given the open boundary within the entrepreneurial ecosystem and related impact on innovation, the third study analyses the role of collaborative HRM practices in supporting open innovation. Drawing upon a knowledge management perspective, we identify three kinds of barriers that may impede open innovation. We also discuss the role of four types of collaboration-oriented HRM practices (i.e., teamwork-based recruitment, training in teamwork skills, team-based appraisals and rewards, and rotational job design) in overcoming three kinds of barriers to open innovation. This dissertation thus provides new insights for entrepreneurial firms to overcome the liability of smallness and newness and actualise opportunities within the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
