The discipline of systems engineering focuses on both the functional and non-functional requirements of a system, aiming to create a cohesive, successful design. Non- functional requirements, also known frequently as "-ilities" (i.e. usability, manufacturability, etc.), are incorporated in an effort to create a well-rounded and elegant design. However, systems engineering still often lacks the integration of users and other key stakeholders early in the design life cycle. This paper will explore increasing design usability as well as product relevancy in the market through systems engineering and compare products that have failed due to their lack of consumer appeal as well as products that have experienced great success because of their design teams' understanding of their target market.
