This thesis traces the subject/worker/citizen from their emergence as graduating students from a maritime school to workers' experiences on board cruise ships. The production of the worker in the cultural framework of the family home, school, and workplace is explored. Using a qualitative methodology nine students from a merchant marine school in the Philippines were interviewed. Twenty-five cruise ship workers who had worked for at least one year were also interviewed to explore their workplace experiences. The findings present a decline in the dominance of Filipino seafarers due to the inadequacies of educational institutions serving the maritime industry. The concept of Filipino-ness provides an understanding of the limits to advancement of Filipinos in the cruise ship industry due to the impact of culture and history.
