Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects around 12% of Gulf War veterans and 15% of Vietnam veterans (Disabled American Veterans, n.d.). PTSD impacts veterans regardless of deployment status (Dursa et al., 2014). Veterans with PTSD experience a wide range of challenges, including a reduction in household income, interpersonal communication struggles, and parental issues (Sareen, 2014). Research has shown that music can be effective in treating PTSD (Veterans Affairs, 2014). This study aimed to investigate the perspectives of veterans with PTSD who received music therapy and music instruction to shed light on how organizations can better support them in the workplace. This study used the sense of community theoretical framework to understand the lived experiences of two groups of veterans with PTSD in the regions of South Carolina and Georgia. One group participated in an 8-week music therapy program, and the other participated in a 12-week music instruction program. The experiences of both groups of veterans were synthesized into three main themes: (1) fostering a sense of belonging within the veteran community, (2) the impact of music on holistic well-being, and (3) the profound significance of music in veterans' lives. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into the diverse and complex experiences that veterans with PTSD encounter. By understanding their challenges, organizations can better support veterans, create more inclusive environments, and provide appropriate resources. Ultimately, this understanding benefits not only the veterans but also their colleagues and the organizations involved.
