Helping blind and visually impaired people (BLV) is the main goal of this research; mainly to detect, in real-time, obstacles via the proposed system, which can be attached to canes to make them navigate their surroundings safely and independently. BLV go through many variable challenges, depending on their sight level and impairments. The presented solution will integrate a camera-based object detection model with an ultrasonic sensor to hand the user clear and precise information about what surrounds them. Using MobileNet SSD for camera detection and an ultrasonic sensor to measure distance, the solution can detect both seen and not seen obstacles to ensure higher safety. The proposed system gives information to the user via audio, vibration, and sound alerts. The audio is delivered via Bluetooth headphones, which provides the user with a heard description of nearby objects using Google's Text-to-Speech (gTTS) feature. In some cases where the audio is insufficient, such as in crowded or noisy spots, the system may not do its job, that is why the project has a vibrator motor to give the user the necessary awareness that he is approaching an obstacle, while the buzzer will work as a supportive module to the vibrator, which will give an immediate feedback, in turns, increase users' safety.By utilizing the components used, this solution runs well in most cases. My experiments have shown that the system functions well in environments with good lighting, accurately detecting objects about 85% of the time. However, in dim places, the camera has shown a decrease in effectiveness; that is where the ultrasonic sensor becomes essential. However, sometimes there are delays when detecting obstacles in busy environments while it faces many changes at once. The proposed system presented in this thesis makes a meaningful contribution to assistive technology by offering a practical tool for BLV. By making it compact and affordable, this ensures the solution is accessible to a wider population.
