Both internationally and locally, disabled people tend to experience greater mental distress than their non-disabled counterparts (Cree et al. 2020; Trani et al. 2020). Yet, a longstanding gap between disability and mental health care persists (Cree et al. 2020). At present, limited research has addressed the mental health needs of disabled people. In particular, research focusing on interventions to improve the mental health of people with a visual impairment [VI] is lacking, and this holds true despite the high prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms, and feelings of loneliness and isolation amongst this group (Akuffo et al. 2021; van der Aa et al. 2016; van Munster et al. 2021). Additionally, in South Africa, the psychological distress associated with vision loss in people with VI is under-recognised and poorly understood (Akuffo et al. 2021). Thus, the aim of the present study was to explore the psycho-emotional experiences and, in turn, the mental health needs of adults with VI. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven adults with VI at a rehabilitation setting in South Africa. Results indicated that participants experienced the silencing of their emotional struggles. Further, participants' accounts illuminated their mental health needs which were, overarchingly, the need to be seen and the need to feel heard. Based on the present study's findings, recommendations are made to improve mental health interventions for people with VI.
