This dissertation seeks to answer the questions of why the Burmese ethnic group in Myanmar appears to respond little or not at all to the gospel and how contemporary Christians can more effectively engage and fulfill the Great Commission among the Burmese community. These Burmese are Buddhists by tradition and are the majority people group in the country. The thesis argument is that historical gospel missions to the Burmese Buddhists have had minimal success, and adapting the T4T paradigm will better prepare, equip, train, revitalize, and mobilize the Christians in Myanmar to reach and win more Burmese Buddhists into the kingdom of God.Chapter One introduces the purpose of the research, key literature on the topic, and the research methodology. Chapter Two describes the Burmese culture, religion, worldviews, and practices, explicitly focusing on Yangon City as the primary research context. Chapter Three surveys the early Protestant missionaries' approaches to the Burmese Buddhists, including evangelism, disciple-making, and church planting. It also considers how they took into consideration the human needs around them. Chapter Four critically analyzes the T4T paradigm's historical and theological development, its strengths and weaknesses, and its implications for the Burmese context.Chapter Five raises the challenges and barriers faced by the T4T paradigm, the church in Myanmar, in transferring the gospel to the Burmese community. Chapter Six, as part of the focal purpose and contribution of the dissertation, proposes a revised T4T model that has the applications of engaging the Burmese Buddhists. Chapter Seven concludes the research with a summary of the findings and contributions. The researcher upholds and envisions that the practical implementations of the modified T4T model, under the guidance and empowerment of the Holy Spirit, can bring about significant changes. This dissertation argues that the practices of the revised T4T model will lead to more new converts, multiply disciples, develop lay leaders, plant healthy house churches, and produce multiple generational Christians and churches among the Burmese Buddhist communities and across the country.
