Familial child sex trafficking, which indicates a parent or guardian is involved as the perpetrator, is currently not well-researched in academic literature. This is despite the estimated 10 million children who are trafficked globally each year. Of these, nearly 100,000 children living in the Philippines are specifically trafficked for sex and sources estimate that familial trafficking comprises approximately half of all child sex trafficking cases globally. Many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) seek to eradicate sex trafficking globally, but the issue is not going away. This dissertation follows a qualitative multiple-case study approach to explore the perspectives of NGO workers in the Philippines on the support that child sex trafficking survivors receive in their care. Relativism, cultural psychology, and an international psychology lens were guides for this study to understand the cultural perspective of the phenomenon. Findings highlight that in addition to basic needs such as food, safety, and shelter, NGOs are providing psychosocial and reintegration support. Currently, survivors working with these organizations are not receiving customized support if they were trafficked by a family member. Additionally, cultural norms in the Philippines present a potential dilemma for NGOs as they consider supporting reconciliation between family perpetrators and survivors or pursuing Western concepts of justice. This research contributes to cultural and international psychology through an exploration of the topic from a local Filipino perspective, and findings are of interest to NGOs, funders, and researchers interested in supporting familial child sex trafficking survivors.
