Rodrigo Duterte's 2016 victory in the Philippines has led scholars to examine the particular circumstances that could lead to such a drastic turn in Filipino politics. This thesis provides a historiography of Filipino colonial history and an analysis of Duterte's predecessor, Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III. The goal of this thesis is to understand how Aquino as a political figure fits into Filipino history while simultaneously laying the foundations for Duterte's rise to power. Beginning with the historiography in the literature review, this thesis looks at five periods of Filipino history. These include independence movements from Spain (1870-1898), independence movements from the US (1898-1946), post-independence Philippines (1946-1965), the Marcos Regime & EDSA (1965-1986), and post-EDSA (1986-present). Three generative themes emerged during the historiography- nationalism, reliance on the colonizer, and tyranny/government ineffectiveness. The generative themes in the literature review will serve as the foundation for a content analysis of the Aquino administration. This content analysis uses Google search result data from a prominent Filipino news outlet, Rappler, an alternative news site in the Philippines. Several interesting findings emerged from the analysis further contextualizing Duterte's rise to prominence. Aquino's strong alliance with the US, inability to bring peace to Muslim-populated areas in the South, and insufficient responses to corruption are mirrored by Duterte's alliance with China, emphasis on his Southern heritage, and populist anti-corruption rhetoric. Framed within the context of the three generative themes, Duterte's ascension to power can be interpreted as a natural progression of the Philippines' colonial legacy. Theoretically, both Albert Memmi's analysis of the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized and Vicente Rafael's genealogy of Filipino colonial history help explain the persistence of these themes.
