Thesis (Ph.D.)--American Public University System , 2024.
China's economic development since joining the World Trade Organization in 2001 has led to increased engagement and activity in the Asia-Pacific region, especially when it comes to Taiwan. This study analyzed how Taiwan could become an inflection point for conflict within the strategic competition and hegemonic power struggle between the U.S. and China. The research design consisted of a qualitative methodology with a multi-method approach consisting of a case study that leveraged historical research and thematic content analysis. NVivo was used to support the analysis. The case study demonstrated that China is in the process of replacing the U.S. as the hegemon by 2049, which includes Xi Jinping's publicly stated goal to take Taiwan, by force if necessary, by 2027. In accordance with the hegemonic stability theory as it relates to behavior tendencies of rising powers in the international system, the research proffered insight that a humanitarian event in Taiwan would be sufficient pretext for China to enter Taiwan. Its contribution to the body of literature was that the aforementioned humanitarian event could be based on food and energy insecurity and concluded that further research should be done to assess if other factors, like the competition over rare earth materials or cyber security, could become the inflection point for conflict between the U.S. and China.
