Thesis (Ph.D.)--Case Western Reserve University, 2024.
As the world gravitates towards sustainable transportation, battery-powered electric vehicles are increasingly vital. This study focuses on the energy efficiency and life cycle analysis of three pioneering battery-powered electric vehicle technologies: in-wheel motor-driven autonomous driving technology, lithium-ion battery direct recycling, and closed-loop lithium-ion battery water-based manufacturing. In-wheel motor-driven autonomous electric vehicle represent a leap in vehicle design, integrating propulsion directly into wheels. This approach minimizes mechanical losses and vehicle weight, promising significant gains in energy efficiency. The decentralization of propulsion through in-wheel motors not only enhances performance but also contributes to an overall reduction in energy consumption, spotlighting the potential for substantial environmental benefits. Parallelly, the benefits of direct-recycling for lithium-ion batteries are analyzed. A process that conserves valuable materials without the intensive energy and environmental costs associated with conventional recycling methods. By enabling the reuse of battery components, direct recycling extends material lifecycles, diminishes the demand for virgin materials, and lowers the overall environmental impact. Additionally, the study examines the shift towards closed-loop water-based manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries, a method that eschews harmful volatile organic solvent for water-based processes, based on the direct recycling technology. This green manufacturing technique significantly reduces the environmental footprint of battery production, aligning with broader sustainability goals by cutting down hazardous emissions and energy use. Our life cycle assessment highlights the environmental advantages and pinpoints opportunities for enhancing the energy efficiency and sustainability of these battery-powered electric vehicle technologies. The findings advocate for the integration of advanced propulsion systems and eco-friendly manufacturing and recycling practices, underlining their importance in advancing sustainable transportation. This thesis provides critical insights for stakeholders in the transition towards a more sustainable automotive future, emphasizing the role of innovative technologies in reducing the environmental impact of transportation.
