Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Kansas, 2024.
This dissertation examines the Spanish Civil War from the perspective of those members of the global Russian-speaking community who experienced it. It focuses on their perspectives, their understanding of the nature of this conflict, and it explores what their point of view means for our understanding of both the Spanish and the Russian Civil Wars. It follows a wide range of people, from former officers in the Tsar's army to Soviet demolitions specialists, from the exiled Trotsky to anarchists volunteering in Catalonia. Taking their various experiences of the war into account, this dissertation argues that they all viewed the Spanish Civil War, in one way or another, as a continuation of the Russian Civil War. For some, like the tsarists who volunteered for Franco's army, this was a literal continuation; they went to Spain not to fight Spanish republicans, but to fight Russian Bolsheviks. For others, it was a more spiritual continuation; a sequel conflict, inextricably connected to the first. In each case, however, it is clear that, for these people, the Russian Civil War had not ended. This dissertation posits a kind of long Russian Civil War, a continuing conflict that endured long after the Bolsheviks consolidated control over the former Russian Empire. The people considered herein carried that war with them through 1939 and beyond, and it profoundly shaped the way they saw the world and their place in it.
