This project analyzes the political strategies Palestinian leadership has followed to gain recognition as a state and admission as a member state in international organizations. The issue of Palestine's statehood recognition by international institutions has been intriguing. Why do some international organizations recognize Palestine as a state while others do not? 138 countries and organizations, including UNESCO and ICC, have recognized Palestine as a state. However, others like the UN and WTO have not. This raises a theoretical question on what factors determine the recognition of statehood beyond the straightforward criteria of the Montevideo Convention, especially considering that these criteria have often been circumvented in alliance with the political reality. I draw upon existing literature related to the history of statehood recognition and the criteria international organizations follow to grant membership to states. Furthermore, I use news media articles and an in-depth interview with the Permanent Representative of the State of Palestine to the United Nations Ambassador Riyad Mansour. This paper finds that the Palestinian leadership's political strategies have been successful despite not meeting the final goal-state recognition. The main obstacle to recognition is not only the Israeli occupation but also the support of Western countries for Israel. It concludes that state recognition is affected by political motives in international organizations, rather than by the legal characteristics of statehood.
