Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University Tandon School of Engineering, 2024.
Millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies, ranging from 30 to 300 GHz, represent a new frontier in cellular communications, offering significantly greater bandwidth alongside advancements in beamforming and spatial multiplexing with multi-element antenna arrays. Moreover, modern cellular networks are increasingly utilizing simultaneous communication across multiple discontinuous bands to achieve macro-diversity and enhanced bandwidth. This multi-frequency communication becomes particularly vital in the mmWave and terahertz (THz) bands, which are often integrated with lower frequencies to enhance system robustness. Accurately evaluating these systems necessitates statistical models capable of capturing the joint distribution of channel paths across various frequencies. The first section of this dissertation introduces a novel methodology based on neural networks for developing multi-frequency, double-directional, statistical channel models. This approach models each channel as a multi-clustered set, employing a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) trained to create random multi-cluster profiles. These profiles include cluster angles and delays, alongside vectors representing random received powers, angular, and delay spreads at different frequencies. The model is designed for straightforward application in multi-frequency link or network layer simulations. This methodology is validated through the modeling of urban micro-cellular links at 28 GHz and 140 GHz, using extensive ray-tracing data. This approach requires minimal statistical assumptions and has proven effective in capturing complex statistical relationships between frequencies.Furthermore, high-rank line-of-sight (LOS) multiple-input multiple-output systems are gaining increased attention for mmWave and THz communications due to the potential for spatial multiplexing, which enables massive data transmission rates over long distances. These systems are also considered viable for multi-path non-LOS (NLOS) environments, where conventional channel models based on plane waves fail to account for wavefront curvature essential for spatial multiplexing modeling. The second part of this dissertation presents a novel and simple multi-path wireless channel parametrization where each path is replaced by a LOS path with a reflected image source. The model is fully valid for all paths with specular planar reflections, and captures the spherical nature of each wave front. Notably, this model introduces only two additional parameters compared to the standard plane wave model, easily obtainable through standard ray tracing. The accuracy of this method is demonstrated through detailed ray tracing simulations at 28 GHz and 140 GHz in dense urban environments.
