Thesis (Ph.D.)--Grand Canyon University, 2024.
Academic literature suggests there is a lack of existing knowledge on specific components to understand the dominant logics of salient identity development inside totalistic institutions like the military because it is a closed institution. The purpose of this study was to determine how former U.S. military members from around the world described the development of a salient identity upon entry into a totalistic institution which lingers into civilian life. A qualitative descriptive approach enabled a collection of deep descriptive data produced from the voices of fully discharged U.S. military veterans residing anywhere in the world. Instruments for data collection were the Demographic Questionnaire, a quantitative instrument known as the Warrior Identity Survey (WIS), and semi-structured interviews. Six research questions for the interviews contained one of Goffman's six theoretical totalistic concepts: regimented and disciplined environment, absolute power, formal rules, rewards and punishment, immediate indoctrination, and mission which served as theoretical dimensions to explore the phenomenon from several angles. An application of descriptive statistics, reflexive thematic analysis, and a description of the phenomenon for data analysis yielded 21 themes which implicated optimal conditions in how the identity is engineered and maintained, thereby posing great deidentification challenges to current and former members. The findings were consistent with each of the three theories. Based on the results, the researcher recommends implementing the WIS prior to exiting the military to gauge strong indicators of the totalistic identity as a safeguard against risks of untreated anti-social behaviors or treatment for the aftermath of contrasting identities.
