The importance of collaborative cartography increasingly is recognized in community-engaged research, pedagogical practice, formal mapping collectives, and the mapping industry. In this dissertation, I ask the overarching question: How can a processual cartographic approach support community geography? To this end, I combine retrospective analyses-i.e., describing past projects-with prospective analysis-i.e., envisioning new projects informed by lessons learned-to reflect upon alternative design processes for community-engaged cartographies (CEC), as a creative research practice within community geography (CG). Throughout, I examine different models for realizing CEC pulling from concepts in CG, design justice, and other established frameworks related to processual cartography (Chapter 1). Specifically, I explore the possibilities of cartographic practice to build and/or enrich communities through three case studies, emphasizing how the collaborative mapping process can shape lived experience and support the co-creation of meaning. Case Study 1 (Chapter 2) presents the results of a mapping workshop conducted with local youth teens in considering the redesign of their after-school program neighborhood center following a Design Challenge that engaged the UW Cart Lab in efforts to advocate for public financial investment in rebuilding the Center. Case Study 2 (Chapter 3) presents the results of a retrospective and prospective analysis of the making and remaking of Mapping for a Sustainable World, an open-source Cartography textbook jointly published by the United Nations (UN) and International Cartographic Association (ICA). Case Study 3 (Chapter 4) presents the results of a mapping workshop entitled Community Mapping Day 2025 at The Pennsylvania State University reflecting upon alternative design processes for community-engaged cartographies (CEC) as a creative research practice within Community Geography (CG). Taken together, I provide a retrospective and prospective framework on the potential of mapping workshops held in cart lab spaces for collective, creative, and community engagement (Chapter 5).
