In this dissertation, I analyze the artistic agency of animals and aesthetic (literary and non-literary) representations. Following notable posthumanist and ecocritical frameworks, including the works of Bruno Latour, Donna Haraway, and Vinciane Despret, among others, this project's interdisciplinary methodology maps out zones of co-constitution between traditional binary oppositions: nature, culture; human, non-human; text, matter; and the humanities and the sciences. In each chapter, I attend to the co-entanglements of literary, zoological, and animal issues along four theoretical axes: compassion, language, mimesis, and performance. My first chapter draws on Yōko Tawada's Etüden im Schnee (2014) to investigate the ties between the literary and political representation of animals, and especially the concept of compassion as a tool for complex, etho-eco-evolutionary identifications. In my second chapter, I turn to Heinrich von Kleist's Penthesilea (1808) to show how animals play a material-discursive role in troubling the processes of signification and substitution, discussing in particular the violent potential of animal metaphorization. My third chapter takes up Franz Kafka's "Ein Bericht für eine Akademie" (1917) to interrogate the aesthetic category of mimesis, the humanist ideal of genius, and the Darwinian notion of survival. Finally, I bring many of the theoretical implications of the project together in my last chapter by analyzing the collective, territorial performance of Yellow-headed blackbirds.
