This study explored the thoughts and feelings of police officers regarding their interventions with mentally ill citizens. This was a qualitative study seeking individual worldviews from various ranks of law enforcement. The design was a case study utilized to examine the narratives of each participant. The societal problem being addressed was the historically poor outcomes present between police and mentally ill citizens both in the U.S. and internationally. The purpose was to gain insight into the perceptions of law enforcement personnel on the street managing these calls. The findings reflected a police force with a strong desire to help, an acknowledgment that they did not know enough about this population, and a repeated request for more training and education in addition to more community resources. Recommendations include giving the police the training and education they are seeking as well as creating more community supports so that police interventions can prove to be more meaningful and lasting for mentally ill citizens. Recommendations for further research include exploring the trauma that is ever present in police work coupled with the strong resistance from police to receive mental health treatment and support for themselves.
