This thesis examines how records safeguarded within military archives, such as after action reports and award citations, provide incomplete accountings of notable maritime events. As these records abide by their own genre conventions, the former is often excessively data-driven while the latter is overly romanticized. This work investigates whether oral history accounts (or "sea stories" as they are colloquially known), paired with creative nonfiction, can create a more honest and humanizing third space between these two extremes. Using the international rescue of 31 mariners from the doomed fishing vessel, ATLANTIC DESTINY, as a case study for analysis, I introduce a creative nonfiction account of events to supplement the official record. To further ground this retelling, I draw upon informal archives in the form of extensive oral history interviews with rescuers and survivors, as well as my own experience as one of the responding helicopter pilots.
