Topics include the relationship of burnout to cultural identity, modality and job satisfaction, and chapters discuss various settings such as the English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) classroom, secondary and primary schools. The book aims to provide possible solutions and ways forward for tackling the issue of burnout, both at a personal and systemic level. It will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of teacher education, wellbeing, school and schooling, as well as practising teachers and school leadership. Carol Griffiths is Professor of English Language Teaching at Girne American University, Cyprus. She has taught in many places around the world, including New Zealand, Indonesia, Japan, China, North Korea, Turkey and UK. She has presented at numerous conferences and published widely, including her books Lessons from Good Language Learners (2009), Developing Teacher Autonomy through Action Research (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017), The Strategy Factor in Successful Language Learning, Lessons from Good Language Teachers (2018), Individual Differences in Language Learning (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020), The Practice of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) Around the World (2023) and Language Intake (2024). Language learning strategies, individual differences, teacher education and support, English as a medium of instruction, English as a lingua franca, action research, burnout, intake, and using literature to teach language are her major areas of research interest.
