Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is a common pollutant in drinking water. Due to its resistance to removal or degradation with traditional water treatment methods, and the health threats that it poses to those consuming it, designing a water treatment process to remove PFOS concentrations from drinking water has become a topic of utter importance. While there are currently a few different methods for the purification of PFOS from water, none show both high efficacy and the lack of production of secondary pollutants. In this research, a novel method of photocatalytic decomposition of PFOS from water was conducted with better efficiency and superior performance than previously researched methods. Through adsorption on a synthesized Fe(III)/PVDF material spun onto a conductive polymer, and photochemical degradation with UV-C light, a large percentage of PFOS was degraded from an aqueous environment following a 72-hour reaction period. This suggests a method for the removal of PFOS from various water sources, such as drinking water, potentially increasing the safety of drinking water for millions of people.
