Quasi-solid polymer electrolytes (QSPEs) are a promising class of conductive materials with a wide array of applications. Our lab focuses on developing electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) with a multifunctional QSPE acting as the electrolyte which allows ion transport and provides good mechanical properties. The electrolyte in typical EDLC construction is either a liquid or thin film, each with its own benefits and drawbacks, and neither of which positively contribute to the mechanical properties of the capacitor. The goal of this study is to optimize our poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)- based QSPE formulation in order to improve the capacitive and mechanical performance of our EDLCs while also replacing petroleum derived propylene carbonate (PC) with bioderived room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). In this study, bioderived choline-based RTILs are prepared, characterized, and evaluated for their potential to act as a solvent and plasticizer in the QSPE as a replacement for PC. A total of nine RTILs prepared from choline and either lactic acid, glycolic acid, or pyruvic acid, with molar ratios (mol choline: mol acid component) of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 have been prepared, with the 1:2 and 1:3 formulations being novel. Each RTIL shows glass transitions below -60 °C and viscosities ranging from 0.5 to 3.6 Pa·s at room temperature. Several RTILs were incorporated into our PEG-based polymer electrolyte with LiTFSI acting as an ion source. The conductivity of this QSPE reached 7.05·10-6 S/cm. Selected QSPEs were incorporated into EDLCs with specific capacitance and energy density values as high as 11.1 F/g and 5.5 Wh/Kg.
