Geriatric social workers can be affected by job burnout because of increased work-related stress. The purpose of this quantitative correlational research study was to examine if and to what extent a relationship existed between trait emotional intelligence and emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment among geriatric social workers in the southern United States. Three research questions guided this study. To what extent does trait emotional intelligence correlate with emotional intelligence, to what extent does trait emotional intelligence correlate with depersonalization, and to what extent does trait emotional intelligence correlate with personal accomplishment? The sample included 93 social workers who were members of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and worked with clients 65 years and older. The instruments used for the data collection were the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF) derived from the Trait Emotional Intelligence Theory and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) based on the Maslach Burnout Model. The Cronbach alpha coefficient of trait EI was .88. The Cronbach alpha coefficient of emotional exhaustion was .90, personal accomplishment was .64, and depersonalization was .27. Due to a low Cronbach alpha, depersonalization was excluded from the final data analysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson product-moment correlation. The findings of this study concluded with the results indicating a correlational relationship between trait emotional intelligence, emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment.
