Thesis (M.Ed.)--University of Alberta (Canada), 1991.
Religious Education has traditionally committed one of two sins. It has either been so concerned with the development or the inculcation of a particular religious viewpoint that it would be more correctly understood as religious indoctrination, or it has focused on a rational-critical approach to religious studies which seems more akin to a philosophy of religion program than religious education. What might religious education which attempts to understand religion as a way of life, and at the same time develops the understanding of the student involved? Recent literature on metaphor has shown it to be a multi-faceted phenomenon of language that is uniquely suited to contribute to a program of religious education. Metaphor functions as an important factor in perception and the ways in which concepts develop. It is an element in value formation and the expression of moral attitudes, a contributor to the development of intimate communities and plays a role in the formation of propositional statements. In this exploration of metaphor and its potential as an instrument of religious education, emphasis is placed on the Christian tradition, but it may well have a contribution to make across religious traditions as well. In addition to an examination of the various ways in which metaphor functions, there is discussion of the nature of religion and the type of education suited to religion. In a final proposal the use of metaphor in the classic tradition of Christian meditation is suggested as an important educational aid.
