In today's fast-paced world of technological advancements and global disruptions, the banking sector is encountering unprecedented challenges that require companies to adapt their business strategies. This dissertation aims to comprehensively analyze Santander's reaction to the uncertainties that emerged during the 2020 pandemic. This study examines the adjustments made by the Group in the short- and long-term period to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and increase its ability to respond to market demands while effectively supporting its stakeholders. Santander implemented contingency plans and accelerated its digital transformation, which it considered fundamental, especially when teleworking became a necessity. This research investigates the importance of modernizing core banking systems to meet the needs of customers in today's constantly evolving financial market. Additionally, it demonstrates how digital transformation, accompanied by an agile culture, can serve as a strategic response during periods of vulnerability. Strategic management models are introduced to support the analysis of the case study by promoting practical implications of the theoretical frameworks.

520 $a Numa era caracterizada por rapidos avancos tecnologicos e interrupcoes globais, o setor bancario enfrenta desafios sem precedentes, que exigem uma adaptacao por parte das empresas da sua estrategia de negocio. Esta dissertacao procura analisar de forma minuciosa a resposta do Santander as incertezas que surgiram aquando enfrentado pela pandemia em 2020. No decorrer deste estudo, sao examinadas as alteracoes que o Grupo efetuou tanto a curto como a longo prazo, com o objetivo de mitigar o impacto do COVID-19 e aumentar a sua capacidade de resposta as exigencias do mercado, suportando simultaneamente e eficazmente os seus stakeholders. O Santander tomou a decisao de se debrucar sobre a implementacao de planos de contingencia, acompanhados pelo aceleramento da transformacao digital que o banco considerou fundamental, principalmente quando o teletrabalho se tornou numa necessidade. Atraves do caso de estudo, esta pesquisa investiga a importancia da modernizacao dos sistemas bancarios centrais para atender as necessidades dos clientes que no mercado financeiro atual, estao em constante evolucao. Adicionalmente, demonstra como a transformacao digital acompanhada por uma cultura agil pode servir como uma resposta estrategica durante periodos de vulnerabilidade. Desta forma, sao introduzidos modelos de gestao estrategica com o objetivo de apoiar a analise do caso de estudo, ao promover implicacoes praticas das construcoes teoricas. Por fim, sao elaboradas questoes relacionadas com o meio envolvente externo, os recursos e as capacidades dinamicas do Santander, que podem ser aplicadas para efeitos de ensino pelos docentes, possibilitando aos alunos enriquecer o seu conhecimento.
