Studies of pollution and purity have typically been conducted through a social anthropological framework, demarcating the ritually impure and unclean from the clean and pure, and examining the impact of this on social interactions. This study has sought to answer the question of how Tibetan Buddhists conceptualize notions of purity and purification, not delineated as a social phenomenon, but through the religious framework of Tibetan Buddhism. To that end, this research has explored notions of purity from within the religious domain and soteriological discourse of Tibetan Buddhism. While some studies have examined Tibetan purity demarcations from an anthropological and sociological perspective, there has been a paucity of studies examining purity as it appears in the religious realm of Tibetan Buddhism. Furthermore, no studies exist that have sought a Tibetan understanding of purity with the express purpose of exploring potential missiological considerations and applications. In this research, the primary method for answering the question of Tibetan notions of purity has been to seek an emic voice through examining a comprehensive range of indigenous Tibetan texts, which explicitly deal with notions of purity, across a broad spectrum of genres, incorporating both the monastics and laity. This approach was considered efficacious in gaining an objective and in-depth understanding from an emic, "insider" perspective. This study, then, has undertaken a semantic and textual analysis of Tibetan Buddhist notions of purity, drawing from the large Tibetan corpus of salient texts. Though other factors which emerged from the data set were the pursuit of spiritual power and merit accumulation as essential elements to Tibetan Buddhist praxis, the predominant finding of this study suggests that purity and purification are of significant concern to Tibetans, both monks and laity, and foundational to their worldview. Notions of purity and purification have considerable bearing on how Tibetans view themselves, the world around them, how they respond to those perceptions, and how they conduct their daily lives. The ontological and soteriological findings of this study suggest that presenting a contextualized gospel within a purification framework may find more resonance with a Tibetan Buddhist audience. These findings also suggest that an awareness of purity and purification concerns may be beneficial to those who are ministering to Tibetan Buddhists. An understanding of the purity schema of Tibetans, coupled with a Biblical perspective of purification, may also be informative in the fostering of indigenous ecclesial praxis.
