The Prosperity Gospel Movement (PGM), a distinctive theology emphasizing healing and financial prosperity, emerged in North America in the mid-twentieth century from earlier roots. During the second half of the twentieth century this movement also became influential in Latin America. Although its initial impact was primarily felt in Pentecostal and charismatic circles, by the beginning of the twenty-first century, PGM teachings were evident in Catholic, Evangelical Protestant, and mainline Protestant communities. The movement has been studied from sociological perspectives, but theological analyses are less common.At the center of historic Christianity is the cross of Christ. The aim of this work is to identify key verses which are significant within the Latin American Prosperity Gospel Movement (LAPGM) and exegete them using a hermeneutical method which combines traditional historical-grammatical exegesis with the canonical perspective of Brevard Childs. To provide context for this approach, the first chapter provides a brief survey of the history of the LAPGM and suggests possible reasons for its popularity. The second chapter describes the hermeneutical approach employed in this dissertation. This approach avoids overly controversial methods and seeks to identify a common ground which Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal Evangelicals should find acceptable.The main section of the work consists of the application of this hermeneutical method to six passages which appear to be significant, for different reasons, based on the survey of a representative sample of LAPGM writings and teachings. The Scripture passages addressed are Galatians 2:19-20, 1 Peter 2:24, Matthew 8:16-17, Galatians 3:29, Matthew 16:24-25, and Romans 5:1. Each chapter describes the use of the passage within the LAPGM, demonstrates the results of the application of the exegetical method to the passage, and compares the results of this exegesis with the usage of the passage within the LAPGM. The method used is inductive. As a result of the application of this method in conversation with LAPGM interpreters, new exegetical insights emerge. In addition, this method provides a pattern which can be applied to other emerging theologies.{A0}The results of this study demonstrate that atonement theology within the LAPGM is generally orthodox. The hermeneutics of the movement, however, often rely on proof-texting and idiosyncratic interpretive styles. Furthermore, teachers within the movement employ the doctrine of the cross selectively, with a great emphasis on the benefits of the cross for the believer and little emphasis on suffering with Christ in imitation of the cross. In addition, the eschatology of the movement tends to draw into the present benefits which, as indicated by the text, are reserved for the future of believers.
