This dissertation argues that the democratic-liberal approach to higher learning typified by early American custodial evangelicals, like Francis Wayland, foreshadowed late nineteenth-century developments related to secularization upon the nation's collegiate and university campuses. The project also documents the inherent complexities of the situation as elite evangelicals, including some Baptists among them, sought to toe the line between adherence to faith-based commitments and responsibility to the broader republic. The project does not seek to pin the Baptist academics in view to secularization in terms of causation; rather, it seeks to identify and explain secularizing tendencies among them.{A0}
