The research presented in this dissertation seeks to address the question concerning agreement patterns with collective nouns in biblical Hebrew. Why do some nouns sometimes function as the subject of singular verbs or pronouns and at other times functions as the subject of plural verbs? Are there discernable patterns of agreement with collective nouns? The first chapter serves to introduce the problem of the collective noun to the reader.Chapter two lays out the previous research on collective nouns. First, it summarizes the discussion of the collective noun in the linguistic approach of cognitive linguistics. Specifically, it identifies the four different types of collective noun, and how they are each conceptualized differently. The focus then falls on how the collective noun has been treated in biblical Hebrew grammars and specialized studies. These studies have primarily focused on morphology to answer this question. According to Hebrew grammarians collective nouns are singular nouns that may function as subjects of plural verbs.Chapter three lays out the methodology for the dissertation. The primary distinction for the research presented in this dissertation is that it pursues this question from a semantic approach rather than a morphological one. By doing so, collective nouns are divided into four categories identified by cognitive linguists. These four noun types are "of-collectives," "Group Focused Collectives," "Variable Collectives," and "Member Focused Collectives." In addition to these four types of collective nouns, analysis is sub-divided into different syntagmatic construction. Agreement patterns for attributive constructions, the predicate, and pronominal constructions are each analyzed individually. Finally, the corpus is limited to the Classical Hebrew of the Pentateuch.Chapter four analyses "of-collective nouns." It describes the semantics of these nouns and presents the data for the different syntagmatic constructions mentioned above.Chapter five analyses "Group Focused Collectives," "Variable Collectives," and "Member Focused Collectives" and their various syntagmatic constructions.Chapter six presents nouns that Hebrew grammarians have generally considered to be collective nouns. This chapter presents the argument that there has previously been a confusion of categories and argues that these nouns should no longer be included in the collective noun lexicon.Chapter seven concludes the dissertation bringing all the research together to show that there are predictable patterns with collective noun in the Classical Biblical Hebrew of the Pentateuch.
