Thesis (Ph.D.)--Dallas Theological Seminary, 2024.
It is the thesis of this dissertation that the Old Testament New Covenant recognition formula influences the interpretation of Colossians 2:11-13. This same formula is defined by divine agency and the ancient Jewish monotheism from which it emerged. In Col 2:11, most interpreters recognize allusions to Deut 30:6. This passage contains a contextually implicit use of the formula (29:4).Accordingly, this dissertation extends this observation among scholars by arguing that the entire substructure of Colossians 2:11-13 contains verbal, thematic, and structural allusions to other NC passages such as Ezek 36:26 (Col 2:11) and Ezek 37:1-14 (Col 2:12-13). Deut 30:6 along with these latter two OT passages are implicitly or explicitly linked to the formula (Deut 29:4; Ezek 36:36, 38; 37:13-14, 28). The writer of Colossians integrates these allusions to the NC recognition formula to tie Christ to God's identity and agency. This dissertation begins with an OT examination of the NC recognition formula to show its tie to ancient Jewish monotheism. What is discovered from such an investigation is any application of NC language to any other figure than YHWH or his Spirit goes beyond the parameters of this same monotheism that controls it unless such an entity is understood to be included in YHWH's identity.Next, we trace this same literary-theological feature through Second-Temple Jewish literature to examine both its function in these same literary works, as well as to probe whether the language of the formula is applied to any other figure other than YHWH such as the Teacher of Righteousness at Qumran or Moses. Our investigation shows that the use of the formula within the literature from this period is consistent with the OT's restriction of the application of such language to any other figure than God or his Spirit.Further, we can detect changes to this restriction of identity and agency of the NC recognition formula by the time we get to the NT. A probe of the Gospel of John and the Letter to the Ephesians exhibits evidence consistent with the thesis of this dissertation whereby the authors apply the restricted language of the formula to the Messiah. Such an application of language is limited by the ancient Jewish monotheism from which the formula emerged shows evidence consistent with what scholars define as a mutation of ancient Jewish monotheism: Christological monotheism. In Col 2:11-13, NC language from the formula is applied to the Messiah because the apostle believes the exalted Christ is included in YHWH's NC identity and agency.
