Thesis (Ph.D.)--Dallas Theological Seminary, 2024.
The purpose of this study is fourfold: (1) to consider how modern critical spatial theories provide the reader with further instruments to comprehend the shared cognitive and cultural environment of Hosea and his original implied audience; (2) to demonstrate the multidimensional aspects of Hosea's geographic and spatial references given the shared cultural context; (3) to consider how these references contribute to the overall rhetoric of Hosea's message, enabling him to effectively persuade his audience; and (4) to provide a methodology for utilizing critical spatial theory as a hermeneutical tool. This study seeks to address these issues through an interdisciplinary approach, engaging in rhetorical criticism and critical spatial theory, with sensitivity to the nature of prophetic hermeneutics. After an introduction to the history of research related to these topics and an explanation of the methodology, this study will apply this interdisciplinary approach to Hosea 1-3. At the conclusion of this investigation, it will be shown that Hosea 1-3 employs the rhetorical usage of space and geography to effectively communicate with the eighth-century, original implied audience. Furthermore, it will be concluded that the modern interpreter's hermeneutic will be enhanced by applying a methodology that engages the principles of critical spatial theory.
