Thesis (Ph.D.)--Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, 2023.
Scholars and scribes have translated the Bible into many different languages and relay their translations and interpretations to various people groups since before the Christian movement. Starting with the Septuagint Greek text for the Gentile and Hellenistic Jewish audience and the Aramaic Targum translations for Aramaic speaking Jews, the Bible crosses linguistic and cultural barriers through the work of scholarship and translation efforts. Bible translations seek to help fulfill Jesus' command to make disciples of all nations and the need to bring the Gospel to all people.Because of the importance of quality translation and interpretation, the author studies Matthew and Luke's use of the Old Testament. The author examines how both Matthew and Luke incorporate the Old Testament texts into their Gospels for the purpose of teaching how they relay the Scripture to their original audiences. Matthew and Luke favor the use of the Greek Septuagint text, but also occasionally translate from the Hebrew Bible into Greek. The author compares and contrasts Matthew and Luke's use of the Old Testament and how each one cites the Old Testament by means of allusion, paraphrase, or direct quotation.Studying Matthew and Luke's use of the Old Testament serves as a model for current evangelism, missions, and pastoral ministry. Bible translators consider various philosophies and methods for Bible translation. Matthew and Luke's use of the Old Testament sets the standard for Bible translation by preserving the original text for an audience speaking another language, and the proper interpretation of the Scripture. This study also serves to help Christians who strive to study the Bible accurately and use the principles in this study when seeking an accurate Bible translation in their language.
