Catholic Social Teaching's advocacy for the right to rest reflects the tradition's increasing engagement with the Christian Scriptures as a primary source for theological reflection. This project models a theological interpretation of Scripture that builds upon Catholic Social Teaching's literary and canonical reading of eschatological rest in Scripture from the seventh day of creation to the Lord's Day. A theological reading of Genesis 2:1-3 that focuses on the literary and canonical evidence for a spiritual view of rest, an examination of the Gospel of John's development of eschatological rest through Jesus, and a retrieval of Augustine's notion of the "perpetual sabbath" that undergirds his vision for integration of action and contemplation. In conclusion, I argue for renewing liturgical and spiritual practices that accentuate why rest is vital for human flourishing and inculcate in the person a posture or disposition of inner rest amid their work.
