Thesis (Ph.D.)--Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, 2023.
Biblical counselors and their counselees both contribute to the potential success of the counseling process, but the characteristics of counselors impact the effectiveness of the counseling encounter much more than that of their counselees. The spiritual condition of biblical counselors is the most significant aspect of offering wise counsel, and several different attributes of the counselor may positively or negatively affect their counsel. This dissertation examines eighteen Old Testament counseling encounters and analyzes the qualities of the counselors and the related impact on their counsel in each account. The writer limits the research to Old Testament passages illustrating biblical counseling principles, which highlights the significance of Old Testament Scripture for study in the biblical counseling field. The dissertation begins with a detailed analysis of every Hebrew term translated with a form of counsel in the NASB95 and recommends acorrect rendering of each word. Next, the writer considers each counseling encounter and examines the counselor and his counsel regarding the degree of theological correctness, participation in obedience or rebellion, and self-oriented or selfless-oriented nature. In the analysis of every account, the research shows that the spiritual condition of the counselors impacted their counsel immensely. When the counselors displayed a negative or ungodly expression of the examined trait, they offered unwise counsel contrary to God's Word. In contrast, those counselors who maintained attributes aligned with God's Word provided wise and godly counsel to their counselees. These findings indicate that biblical counselors should include Old Testament counseling encounters in their studies of counseling principles, and they should focus on the significant impact of personal attributes on their counsel.
