Thesis (Ph.D.)--New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 2023.
The purpose of this dissertation is to discover the importance of the apocryphal infancy gospels for the NT text and the related implications for the NT canon. Two methodologies were used to analyze the Protevangelium of James and the Infancy Gospel of Thomas: the church father method used in textual criticism and Richard Hays's method of intertextuality. The hypothesis was that most of the recoverable text in the Protevangelium of James will come from the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke. The recovered text from the Infancy Gospel of Thomas will be smaller and from the infancy narrative in Luke. The recovered text will demonstrate affinities with the D-text. Finally, the Protevangelium of James will have a broad range of references to the OT and NT, while the Infancy Gospel of Thomas will have a limited range of references with few OT references. The results showed textual affinities to the Byzantine text and the D-text in the Protevangelium of James, but no conclusive affinities in the Infancy Gospel of Thomas. The Protevangelium of James extensively used the OT and NT in similar manners. The Infancy Gospel of Thomas had more intertextual references than most scholars acknowledge, but still few OT references.
